Cashmere Care Guide

A cashmere garment, cared for properly, can last 10 to 15 years. Cared for poorly, it loses shape and softness in a single season. Here is how to keep yours in the rotation longer.

How to wash cashmere

Hand washing is the safest method. Fill a sink or basin with cool water (no warmer than 30°C / 86°F) and add a small amount of cashmere-safe detergent like The Laundress or Soak. Submerge the garment fully and gently swirl. Do not rub, twist, or wring.

Soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Drain and rinse with cool water until all detergent is gone. Press out excess water gently. Never wring.

If you must machine wash, use the wool or delicate cycle on cold water, with a mesh laundry bag. Spin at the lowest speed.

How to dry cashmere

Lay the garment flat on a clean dry towel. Roll the towel up, pressing gently to absorb water. Unroll and reshape the sweater on a fresh dry towel. Smooth out wrinkles by hand. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Never hang wet cashmere. The weight of water will stretch and distort the shoulders permanently.

How to store cashmere

Fold cashmere, never hang. Hanging stretches the fabric. Store in a breathable cotton bag during off-season, with cedar blocks to deter moths. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.

How to remove pills

Pilling on new cashmere is normal as loose fibers shed. After the first 2-3 wears, use a cashmere comb or pumice stone to gently lift pills. Move in one direction, with light pressure. After the initial pilling phase, the fabric stabilizes.

How to remove stains

Treat stains immediately. Blot (do not rub) with cool water and a small amount of detergent. For oil stains, use cornstarch or talc, leave for an hour, then brush off and wash.

For deep stains or stains older than a day, take to a dry cleaner who specializes in fine knitwear.
